Theatre: The Lightning Thief The Percy Jackson Musical

Last week I was very kindly to invited to see The Lightning Thief at the Theatre Royal in Brighton this week.

The Lightning Thief - The Percy Jackson Musical is such a fun, family friendly musical that celebrates Greek Mythology with amazing effects & lighting. Based on the book by Rick Riordan it follows twelve-year-old Percy Jackson who is struggling with school and feeling like he doesn’t fit in. Until he discovers he’s actually a demigod, the son of Poseidon and the myths and monsters are in fact all very real. When Zeus’s powerful lightning bolt is stolen, Percy is accused of the theft and sent on an epic cross-country quest to clear his name and prevent a war among the gods. Alongside his friends Annabeth and Grover, Percy faces mythological monsters, uncovers family secrets, and learns what it truly means to be a hero. The story is filled with humour, heart, and a rock-infused musical soundtrack. I loved how it brought Greek mythology to life in a fun, fresh and exciting way.

I went in without knowing what to expect too much, I hadn’t heard any of the songs, I haven’t read the book it’s based on and I only vaguely remembered watching the first film (but I do remember enjoying it!). I think you can go in not knowing anything and just enjoy a great show, equally I’m sure if you have read the book and know the movie well then it adds an extra layer to it.

There are some of your favourite Greek gods, a demi-god camp, a quest, monsters, sword fighting, friendships and plenty of twists and turns to the plot. I particularly liked the staging and sets, they were really interesting. There is a kind of porthole at the back of the stage which is used to depict scenes from the past or things happening elsewhere and I thought was a really creative way to show those visuals. I think this would be such a fun show to take your kids to if they’re currently studying Greek mythology at school or if it’s a topic they really enjoy!

Check out The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical for more information on the production and where you can see it and head over to Theatre Royal Brighton to see the wide range of pre and post West End touring plays and musicals, ballets and comedy’s that they have coming up.

*I was kindly invited to see this production by the Theatre Royal in Brighton however all views, as always, are my own.
